My journey with Safeman Safefamily began in 2024 as a peer support worker and I will begin my Bachelor in Applied Counselling in March 2025.
I am employed under the MSD - Ministry of Social Development "Whānau Resilience Long Term Healing" contract.
My mahi involves supporting the Young Adult List in the District Court, a process designed for 18–25-year-olds. This list modifies typical court procedures, allowing Community and Iwi support people to participate actively in the court process. The aim is to ensure that everyone understands what is happening and feels understood by those making decisions about our whānau, enabling full participation in the court process. I write intervention court plans for whānau to achieve positive learning outcomes through programmes directed by presiding Judges.
Successful completion of the court plan, with the support of Counsel, allows whānau to apply for a Section 106 Discharge without Conviction, marking the beginning of their journey to change. SMSF, being Peer Led and Professionally Supported, focuses on empowering whānau to thrive by supporting them holistically throughout their court journey and beyond.
My partner is Winton Ropiha we have a blended whānau of 8 Children and 22 mokopuna, we live by the Moana over summer, we love to gather kai, go kayaking, swim, and just enjoy a stroll along the beach, our lifestyle is kept simple, we fly our Tino Rangatiratanga flag as it enhances our Mana Motuhake this allows us both to be well in our mahi so we can support our whānau in a holistic way. We reside in our home in Waituhi over the winter months.
